A quiet place should be open to everyone. Holy Instant is built to be used comfortably however You read, hear, tap, and see — not as an afterthought, but as part of the care.
This is one of two promises the app is built on. Open to everyone, which this page describes; and private, always — nothing You do is collected, sold, or tied to You. They are one commitment — Your dignity — and neither is ever traded for the other. Its companion is Privacy.
VoiceOver
Every button and control has a spoken label, every heading is marked as a heading, and the parts of the screen that are only decoration stay silent — so the app can be read and moved through entirely by voice, with nothing lost and nothing in the way.
Larger text
All of the writing scales with Your system text size. Turn the type up as far as You like in Settings and the reader, the lessons, and Grace grow with it — the words are never locked to a small fixed size.
Dark and light
Both are first-class. The app follows Your system appearance — warm paper by day, deep ink by night — and every color was chosen for both, so neither mode is the lesser one.
Reduced Motion
If You ask Your device for less motion, Holy Instant listens. The gentle animations settle, and the held moment of stillness keeps its rhythm through a soft, steady light and quiet haptic breaths instead of movement — motion is never the only way something is shown.
The holy instant on this website
There is a holy instant on the front page of this site, not only in the app: a light that breathes the app's own breath — four seconds in, one held, six out — five whole breaths, and then one line of the Course to rest on before it lets You go. It is offered, never sprung: it opens only when You ask it to, never on a scroll, a timer, or a way out.
With Reduced Motion on, the light does not pulse. It holds steady, at the same fullness the app rests it at, and the breath is written out in words instead — breathe in for four, hold for one, let it out for six — so the pacing is Yours to keep. Nothing is taken away. The moment still runs, and it still ends on its line of the Course. Less motion, never less meaning.
With a screen reader, it is a proper dialog. It announces itself as a moment of stillness, reads the breath aloud once, and puts You on the close button. The rest of the page goes quiet behind it, Escape closes it, and Your place on the page comes back to You. It does not count breaths at You while You breathe — the only thing it speaks again is the line of the Course at the end, because that line is the point of it.
It can be opened, held, and closed by keyboard alone, and every control it has can be seen when it is focused.
Color is never the whole story
Nothing important is told by color alone. A selected tab also carries its name and its own shape; a message that did not send is marked in words, not only a hue. If color is hard for You to tell apart, meaning still comes through. On this site, a link is underlined as well as written — the underline is dark enough to see, so the link never depends on a color You may not perceive.
Honest contrast
The text is set to meet the WCAG AA contrast standard against its background in both light and dark, and the ratios are measured, not assumed — computed from the actual colors, on the app and on this site alike. Every passage of body text clears 4.5 to 1, and every rule, border, and focus ring clears 3 to 1.
Where this page has been wrong, it has been corrected rather than quietly left. The headings on these pages were once set in gold — 3.17 to 1 on paper, short of the standard this very page claimed to meet — and the underline beneath a link was so faint (1.27 to 1) that it barely marked the link at all. Both now read in the same quiet ink as the rest of the writing: 5.49 to 1 on paper, 7.04 to 1 on ink. The claim above is true because these were fixed, and it was not true before.
